Final Carbon Rebate 2025 Now Rolling Out: What Canadians Need to Know About Payment Timing, Amounts, and Eligibility

Canada Sends Out Last Round of Carbon Rebates as Consumer Carbon Pricing Ends

The final Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) payments are now being issued to eligible Canadians, marking the end of a central pillar of the federal government’s carbon pricing policy. However, when you receive this last rebate depends entirely on when you filed your 2024 taxes, not on a fixed universal payment date.

Final CCR Payments Have Begun — But Not Everyone Gets It at the Same Time

Canadians who filed their 2024 income tax return electronically by April 2 began receiving their final CCR payments on April 22, 2025. Those who signed up for direct deposit with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) saw the money land directly in their bank accounts. Others are receiving paper cheques by mail.

If you filed after April 2, your CCR will be issued after your return is assessed by the CRA. That could mean a weeks- or months-long delay, depending on your tax processing time.

This payment marks the final installment of the carbon rebate, as the federal government has ended consumer carbon pricing in all participating provinces and territories.

Why This Payment Matters

The Canada Carbon Rebate was the federal government’s way of returning revenues from the federal fuel charge to residents in provinces and territories where the federal backstop applied. It was designed to offset higher energy costs caused by the carbon price on gasoline, natural gas, and other fuels.

The consumer carbon pricing system ended earlier this year, making this the last CCR payment Canadians will receive under the current program.

How Much Is the Final Rebate?

CCR amounts vary by province and family size, as well as whether a rural supplement applies. Below is a breakdown of the base payment for an individual and for a family of four:

Individual CCR Amounts by Province:

  • Alberta: $228
  • Saskatchewan: $206
  • Manitoba: $150
  • Ontario: $151
  • New Brunswick: $165
  • Nova Scotia: $110
  • Prince Edward Island: $110 (includes rural supplement)
  • Newfoundland and Labrador: $149

Family of Four CCR Amounts:

  • Alberta: $456
  • Saskatchewan: $412
  • Manitoba: $300
  • Ontario: $302
  • New Brunswick: $330
  • Nova Scotia: $220
  • Prince Edward Island: $220 (includes rural supplement)
  • Newfoundland and Labrador: $298

In households with children, the first spouse or partner to file taxes receives the full household rebate.

Who Is Eligible?

You’re eligible for the CCR if:

  • You were a resident of a province or territory that had the federal fuel charge in place for part of 2024.
  • You filed a 2024 income tax return, even if you had no income.
  • You meet basic CRA eligibility requirements, including being at least 19 years old or having a spouse/common-law partner or a child.

Political and Economic Concerns

Some economists have criticized the timing and purpose of this final rebate. Robin Boadway, an emeritus economics professor at Queen’s University, pointed out that these payments are being issued even though no new carbon tax revenues are being collected.

“It’s just the principle of the thing of continuing to send this money out, even though no carbon taxes were being collected to pay for it,” Boadway told CTVNews.ca.
“It’s not actually a rebate cheque in the meaningful sense of the word.”

Others argue that sending the payment just days before a federal election could be perceived as politically motivated.

What Happens After 2025?

With the carbon pricing program now dismantled for consumers, no further CCR payments are expected beyond this round unless the next government reinstates the program or launches a new initiative. Climate policy is likely to remain a key election issue, especially as Canadians continue to grapple with inflation, energy costs, and environmental concerns.

Bottom Line:
If you haven’t filed your 2024 tax return yet, there’s still time to receive the final CCR rebate—but the sooner you file, the sooner you’ll get your payment. For those who filed before April 2, the funds should already be arriving. This marks the close of a significant chapter in Canadian climate and fiscal policy.
